peyton elizabeth de mornay had a relatively normal childhood. she played with her barbies, jumped rope, and competed in the local spelling bee. each and every year, peyton was on the honor roll. peyton's younger sister, despite being a pest, was her best friend. while other children's parents were getting a divorce, peyton's parents were very much in love and not afraid to show it. all around, the de mornay family epitomized the happy, upper-middle class hartford family. they even had the white picket fence. people in the neighbor wanted what the de mornay's had, but by the time peyton was thirteen, people felt very differently about the de mornay family.

the year that she turned twelve, peyton's father was diagnosed as having glioblastoma multiforme, also known as a brain tumor. though her parent's tried to stay optimistic and mask the fatality of her father's illness, peyton knew the sad reality. her father was going to die. glioblastoma multiforme was the deadliest and most common brain tumor. as soon as her parents openly admitted her father's illness, she became a girl obsessed. her goal was to learn as much as she could about her father's illness, cancer as a whole, and death. before the family knew it, peyton had become a bit of an expert on oncology, but that only lead to great depression. she clung to two things the year she turned thirteen, her father and medical books.

two weeks after peyton's thirteenth birthday, her father died. burying her father was the single worst moment of peyton's young life, but it had lead her to her purpose in life - medicine. she had found her passion. she was going to be an oncologist. she was going to help people like her father.

things only continued to go downhill after peter de mornay's death. olivia de mornay was hospitalized for a suicide attempt. peyton and madeline de mornay were sent to live with their grandmother de mornay for the summer. the girls' grandmother was eager to take them in. she wanted to take them away from all reminders of their father's death. peyton's summer away from home was the biggest reminder of her father's death. although peyton hated her grandmother's home in brooklyn, she used it to her advantage. peyton would go to different libraries in new york each day to study, using the subway as transportation. at the end of the summer, olivia de mornay's mental status was still up for debate. the girls were forced to move in with their eccentric grandmother. the girls were registered in the brooklyn school system.

high school in brooklyn was not as bad as expected. new york was different than what peyton had seen on tv. before she knew it, peyton had a small circle of friends and a crush, owen coppola. owen was a year older than peyton and lived around the corner. he was a shoe-in for valedictorian. peyton never let anything derail her from her studies, except for owen coppola. he was the only exception. after a year and a half of solid friendship, owen confessed his mutual attraction towards peyton. the two began to date. they became attached at the hip. the two studied together, looked at colleges together, and dreamed of their matching medical degrees. they were not just boyfriend/girlfriend, but best friends. in peyton's junior year, she lost her virginity to owen and vice versa. owen was a senior and at the end of the year, he had decided on going to school in san francisco. it was across the country but it was the best opportunity he had. peyton knew that letting owen go was the best thing she could do for him. he didn't want her to sit around waiting for her and knew that a long distance relationship would be a bad idea for the two of them. peyton and owen mutually parted. they remained pen pals and best friends.

at the beginning of her senior year, peyton applied early decision to nyu. she was swiftly accepted. she began working on applying for scholarships. she got seventy-five percent of her college paid off. her grandmother offered to pay for the rest, but peyton declined. she was going to pay her own way through college. she was going to make it on her own. peyton told her grandmother that all she wanted was a part-time job, and that's what she got. her grandmother connected her with a part-time job as a cashier.

a year later, peyton began school. college was challenging, but with her determination and hard-work, peyton was able to make it through. anxiety was a reoccurring set back. peyton went to a psychologist and was diagnosed as having obsessive compulsive tendencies and extreme anxiety. she was prescribed medication for her panic attacks and obsessive compulsive tendencies. they were a great help. at the end of the year, she claimed her pre-med major.
